Mosaicist

Laurence at work. Mosaics often stood as a social statement about their patron, or the purpose of a building or the commemorate a particular event. Whichever their purpose though mosaics form a central core to our understanding of Roman culture. Much of what is know about Roman use of colour, tools and other daily products has been gleaned from mosaics. Walls might collapse and roofs fall in through neglect, but the mosaics were often left reasonably undamaged beneath the rubble, protected against the passage of time because of their new found barrier and the hardy materials used.

Within our group we are lucky enough to have a mosaicist whose displays have caused much comment and interest from the public.

Laurence has been trained in the ancient techniques used by the Romans in laying their mosaics and can often be found at the shows working on a new piece of art.

Here are some more images of Laurence at work that you might be interested in.

The display is prepared. A work in progress.
