Samian Pottery

Samian ware, or terra Sigillata, is a distinctive glossy table ware, with moulded decoration. Usually red, but also known in yellow and black. Mainly produced in Italy and Southern Gaul until C.110 AD. Early examples where imported to the South East coast in the 1st Century BC, but post conquest flooded into the province. They were categorized by the archaeologist Dragendorff (see left hand column) and as the patterns changed with fashion can be used to date Roman sites.
