Coins of Roman Britain |
The System of coinage From about 70 AD until the 3rd Century there was a stable coinage system in Britain. Rare gold coins called aurei, silver denarii, and a series of bronze coins, principally the sestertius, dupondius and as, made up the currency of the period.
During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, one gold aureus would be equal to 25 silver denarii or 100 brass sestertii, 200 brass dupondii or 400 asses of copper. |
