North Africa—El Jem

El Djem, (ancient Thysdrus) flourished in the 2nd C AD on the olive trade, by the 3rd C when the arena was built this was North Africa’s largest city after Carthage. Following a revolt in 238AD the city was razed by troops loyal to Maximinus Thrax.
