AQUILIFER
Flavius Quadratus
This man’s inscription is supposed to have come from Setubal, in Portugal. (It may, however, be a forgery). He was the son of Marcus, in the Galeria voting-tribe, and says he set up his memorial while still living.

CENTURIO
L. Decrius Longinus
This man lived near Naples, and began his career as personal assistant to a senator. His patron secured him a direct appointment as a Centurion in the legion, from which he went on to two centurionates in Leg VII Gemina, and another in Leg XXII Deiotariana: fromwhich he advanced to Primus Pilus in that legion. His final position was as Praefectus Castrorum of Leg IX Hispana. His father was called Lucius, as was his son L. Decrius Iulianus (nicknamed ‘Numisianus’) and they belonged to the Sergians. The son also entered the army, holding the position of Princeps in Leg XI Claudia ‘ Faithful & True’ when setting up the memorial to his late father. This was probably in the middle 2nd Century, with the primipilate occurring in the reigns of Trajan or Hadrian.

M. Cornelius Saturninus
This man’s family lived in Rome, where he and his brother Iulianus set up a memorial to their step-father M. Iulius Heiro with their mother Iulia Heirophila, some time in the later 1st or 2nd Century.

C. Iulius Maritimus
He was born in Cologne, his father being Caius and their voting-tribe the Clustuminia. He served successively as a Centurion in Britain in VI Victrix and II Augusta, most probably while they were at work on Hadrian’s wall since a Centurial stone records a section built by the century of Marit(imus). Then, it is believed, he was transferred to the depot of III Augusta at Lambaesis in Algeria, to replace experienced senior officers who, along with large numbers of men, had been drafted away east. He died at the age of 45 years, 5 months and 13 days, whilst serving there, his memorial being set up by his wife Salveina Meteliana assisted by their freedman Salvienus Trophimus.
